Topic guide
Income Tax
Understand income tax liabilities, deductions and returns.
Identify the taxpayer and income
Begin with the legal identity of the taxpayer, the income year and the nature of the income. Salary, business receipts, investment income and gains on disposal may need different treatment. An individual and a company carrying on a similar activity should not automatically use the same computation.
Build a traceable tax calculation
Keep the accounts, tax adjustments and payment credits separate. Select the relevant income-year legislation before applying a rate, exemption or concession. Match withholding and instalment credits to supporting records, and retain the working that connects the calculation to the filed return.
