VAT & Excise
Register, invoice, claim credit, file and comply.
Separate the supply from the document
For VAT, start with what was supplied, the parties involved and the transaction date. Registration, the status of the supply, invoicing and input-credit eligibility are related but distinct questions. For excise, identify the goods or service and the relevant licensing and control regime before using a schedule.
Keep the return tied to the records
Reconcile sales, purchases, imports and adjustment documents with the return. Retain invoices and the reason for each credit note, debit note or restriction. A calculator can illustrate arithmetic; it cannot decide the legal eligibility of a purchase or supply.
