Law, Forms & Tools

Start with the income you receive and the period to which it belongs. Salary, a proprietorship, investments, retirement receipts, property disposals and foreign receipts can require different treatment. A deduction made by a payer does not by itself answer whether it is final or whether other income needs a return.

1. Identify the taxpayer and income year

Keep your PAN, legal identity and income-year records together. Separate receipts earned personally from those of a company or another entity. When reviewing an older receipt, use the law and evidence for that period; a clearance request made today does not move the receipt into the current year.

2. Prepare the annual income working

Collect employer statements, bank and investment records, business accounts where relevant, disposal documents and deduction evidence. Separate a reduction in taxable income from a tax credit, and separate both from tax already paid. Reconcile each item to the period and taxpayer before calculating the balance.

3. Review a change in circumstances

A new employer, business activity, foreign receipt or asset disposal can add questions that last year’s salary working did not answer. Preserve the dates and actual arrangement. Where final withholding is claimed, keep the precise receipt category and supporting evidence instead of treating all payments alike.

4. Keep a usable filing record

Retain the reviewed computation, submitted return, acknowledgement and payment evidence. If a payer’s credit is missing, match the PAN, period, amount and certificate and use the appropriate correction route. Keep any unresolved discrepancy visible in the working rather than forcing the total to agree.

5. Choose your next task

Open the topic matching the task, then select the relevant article or official service. Check its period, source status and review note before using it. For older transactions, keep the earlier source set and working rather than applying the current-year explanation automatically.
