Correcting an error after a return has been filed

A filed return can differ from the underlying records because of a wrong period, omitted transaction, classification error or duplicated credit. Identify the actual error and the permitted correction route before preparing a replacement. Different taxes and filing stages have different procedures; this guide does not grant a general right to reopen any return.

1. Establish what was filed

Preserve the original return, acknowledgement, payment and approved working. Identify the taxpayer, tax type, period, submission date and the exact field affected. Compare the return with the books and supporting documents. Separate an error in the submitted figure from a later transaction or a change in interpretation. Record whether an assessment, review or dispute is already open because that can affect the available route.

2. Prepare the effect of the correction

Show the original figure, corrected figure, reason and supporting evidence. Recalculate related totals and check whether another period or a counterparty record is affected. For example, an omitted purchase invoice requires both a credit-eligibility analysis and a check that it was not claimed elsewhere. A spreadsheet difference without invoice support is insufficient. Review any additional tax, interest, payment or refund question separately.

3. Use the lawful route

Read the applicable current provision and official procedure for the return. The detailed VAT guide distinguishes the amended seven-day correction window for a timely submitted return from historical corrections. Obtain the required authorisation and retain the actual submission or authority correspondence. Do not repeatedly upload different figures to make a portal total match the ledger. If the route is unclear, record the question and seek an official or professional determination.

4. Close the record

Preserve the original and corrected versions with a clear explanation of their relationship. Reconcile the authority’s recorded balance to the revised working and payment evidence. Check related e-TDS, VAT or financial-statement records where relevant. Mark the task complete only when the required outcome is evidenced. Record the cause and control improvement so the same error is caught before the next filing.
